What is Google My Business?

December 15, 2020

Do you feel the Internet, and specifically creating and maintaining your businesses online presence, seems to have taken over your life? You’ve got a business to run, customers to interact with, inventory to keep, bookkeeping, and marketing and yet everyday there’s a new site that wants you to claim and maintain your business listing on it. How can you possibly run your business and maintain your online presence at the same time?

Why not start at the top? We all know Google has taken over the Internet with their Internet-related services and products. And one such product is Google My Business, AKA GMB, and formerly known as Google Local and Google Places. You may ask, “What’s the Purpose of Google My Business?” and that’s a great question, especially for small business owners who have way too much to do and not enough time to get it all done.

Google My Business is a service offered by Google that helps businesses create and manage their Google listings that appear when customers search for businesses on Google Search and Maps. This handy tool helps manage your businesses online presence, allowing you to post photos, list and describe the products and services you sell, promote upcoming events and sales, send out blog post notifications, respond to reviews, and help explain to the world why you are the best choice for potential customers to do business with you. An active GMB account also shows Google that you’re serious about your business and active in it and helps your website rank better in search results. It’s an key piece of your online presence strategy.

You can find your GMB listing by searching for you business name in Google, and it should appear on the right-hand side of the search result. You can see the search result and GMB listing for ProFusion Web Solutions here:

This is where viewers can easily find our address, phone number, website link, and directions to our location. The Request a Quote button is customizable, there are a variety of Call to Action buttons in the listing choices. Scrolling down the listing, you see Reviews, Information about the Products and Services we sell and any current and past posts we have put on our listing.

Many directories and listings use Google as their information source, which makes GMB a great way to make sure business information, such as phone numbers, address and operating hours are accurate. It is only for local businesses that do face to face business with their customers or that travel to visit customers where they are. Online only businesses are not eligible for GMB accounts.
