Congrats! You have your business accounts set up across multiple social media platforms and now you can sit back, relax, and watch the sales flow in!

Well, not yet... social media is a very powerful tool, but simply having a social media presence isn’t what’s going to drive up your sales. In order to harness the power of organic social media, you’ll have to create a personalized content plan for your business, and post frequently to get the needle moving on leads.

“Easy enough, I’ll just post information about my products and services.”

Think again. Posting promotional content is an essential part of social media marketing, but you’ll need to incorporate many different types of social media content throughout your profile to be successful.

“This sounds too time consuming...”

You’re not wrong here. Social media management requires a lot of love and attention, but we’ll break down the top six categories you’ll need to use in your content plan, to make it as easy on you as we can.

Promotional Content

We’ll start with the obvious, your social accounts will need to be posting promotional content in order to show off your business, products, and services to current and future customers. Here are some ideas:

  • Post photos and short-form videos showcasing your products or talk about your services.
  • Share customer testimonials.
  • Have a new special or discount? Promote it on social!
  • Provide information about your business.

This helps your followers know exactly who you are without having to guess what your business offers.

Educational Content

The next important aspect of your content calendar will be educational content. It’s meant to educate and inform your audience on all aspects of your industry, not just your business. Educational content might sound boring, but you can make it fun! Own a clothing boutique? Talk about what colors look good on certain skin tones, or tips on washing your clothes to maintain their color and condition. Here’s some more ideas for educational content:

  • Write weekly blogs and share the content to your social media.
  • Provide tips and tricks to your customers.
  • Post industry related research, facts, and stats.
  • Educate your followers on industry best practices.

Educational content is meant to be engaging, so it’s important to use your creativity when creating.

Entertaining Content

Believe it or not, your business accounts don’t have to be strictly-business all the time. It’s important to incorporate some entertainment on your accounts to really engage your customers and followers. Entertaining content can be any of the following or more:

  • Funny or relatable memes.
  • Resharing humorous and trending videos.
  • Hosting contests and giveaways.
  • Holiday related content.

Now although sharing memes seems easy enough, it’s important to keep your posts industry-related. Sharing a viral video completely unrelated to your line of business will only attract followers, not actual leads who are included in your target audience. If your business is so niche that there are no existing memes, you can always make your own. It’s important to have fun with it while always keeping your goal in mind. Share entertainment with intention.

Inspirational Content

Sprinkling inspirational content in the mix is a great way to inspire your followers and help them imagine how your business can supplement their life. Own a canoe shop? Share an inspirational story from someone whose life changed when they grabbed their first paddle. This helps your followers imagine how their life could change for the better after using your product or service. Here’s some more inspirational ideas:

  • Inspirational quotes.
  • Positive industry-related facts or stats.
  • Personal success stories.

Connection Content

Connecting with your audience is one of the most essential aspects of marketing. People often don’t connect to a brand because of a lack of human interaction. In fact, humans have a neurological response that lights up every time we connect with other humans through language, compassion and belonging, so it’s so important to show authenticity, and market to humans as humans. Sure, your products are incredible, but who are the faces behind your business? Who is producing these products and answering emails? Some great ways to build connection on your social accounts include:

  • Filming a day-in-the-life at your job.
  • Behind-the-scenes videos.
  • Product review videos from customers.
  • Meet-the-team, featured employees, or employee of the month content.

Help your customers feel like part of a community, and it will build loyalty and emotional connection to your brand.

Conversational Content

We know that parts of our brain light up when we have human to human connections, so now it’s essential to prioritize meaningful interactions with our followers. Building a customer-friendly environment looks like: encouraging conversation, questions, comments, messages, and interactions. Here are some content ideas to get your customers talking:

  • Asking questions in your captions and stories.
  • Posting polls, or quizzes for your customers.
  • Using interactive stickers on your Instagram stories and sharing the responses.
  • Using “caption this” or “fill in the blank” in your captions.

The Purpose of social media marketing is to build your brand, connect to your customers, drive website traffic, and increase sales.
